TOP 12 REASONS TO RENT OUTDOOR GEAR IN HAWAII

WHY RENT OUTDOOR GEAR? Because, you’re smart.

Renting gear while you travel offers a range of benefits that go beyond just saving money and travelling light. Whether you’re flying to or around Hawaii, or planning your next big adventure, be sure to make gear rental and Outdoor Junkiez part of it.

HERE’S WHY:

1. TRAVEL LIGHT

Be a minimalist and lighten your load by leaving the bulky items behind. Search for all the camping equipment and surfboards you need on Outdoor Junkiez (OJz) and pick it up when you land. We’ve all been or seen that obnoxious backpacker with an over-stuffed pack, slapping everyone in the face with that Thermarest unstylishly strapped to the outside. DON’T BE THAT PERSON.

2. SAVE SOME MONEY

Baggage fees are outrageous and can quickly piss you off and cut into your budget. So why not avoid those fees by renting all the gear you need WHERE you need it. Renting gear is not only less of a hassle, it’ll probably cost less than the baggage fees and you won’t risk any damage from those airline baggage handlers. It’s like anything with the letters F-R-A-G-I-L-E on it might as well spell “PLEASE throw this on the bottom of the plane with all the heavy sh*t on top.” And don’t forget, with all that savings you can enjoy that overpriced airport Bloody Mary or like 100 bahn mis in Vietnam.

3. BE “GREEN”

Traveling can be extremely wasteful, especially in our little island community of Hawaii where we see around 8 million visitors per year. There are many sustainability issues in the travel industry, which is a rant we’ll save for a later time, so we at OJz made it our mission to¬†make outdoor travel more: accessible, affordable and most of all, sustainable. We call it “Conservation through Recreation.” Our first step was¬†creating a gear rental directory and outdoor community dedicated to sharing quality gear, rather than buying cheap junk that ends up in landfills.

4. GET LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

When you rent from locals, you’re not just picking up gear, you’re getting an insider’s view into their local environment. Get tips on the best hikes that your google search forget to mention, learn about some native plants or the best hole in the wall to grab a beer and a fish taco after your hike. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll even make a new friend.

5. INVEST IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY

At OJz we not only created a market for you to rent gear from local people but we also work hard to find responsible local rental businesses and put their gear on the site too. So rather than buying some crap you’ll hardly use from that corporate budget-superstore, why not invest that money into the people and local businesses where you live or where you’re going.

6. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

Good outdoor gear can be expensive, so before you sell off one of your kidneys or pull a second line of credit on your house, how about you try out some gear first? Test and find out what you like and don’t like, from there you can confidently invest in the gear you need and not overspend on something you might not like.

7. USE HIGH QUALITY GEAR

NOT ALL GEAR IS CREATED EQUAL. The good brands and manufacturers invest in the right materials and construction to make sure their products can handle the outdoors. They usually have solid repair and return policies just in case something goes wrong too. Crappy brands and gear not only ends up in the trash, it can also put you at risk. Try setting up your tent in high winds and rain only to have the poles snap, then ask yourself if that budget tent was really worth it. At OJz, we support the best and only promote quality gear in our rental platform.

8. RIGHT GEAR FOR THE OCCASION

As essential as using quality gear is, using the RIGHT gear for the occasion is just as important. You don’t want to show up to the beach-side camp site in your “0 Degree” alpine sleeping bag, you might literally sweat your balls off. So if you’re travelling to a place you’re not equipped for, keep your balls out of danger and don’t waste money investing in all new gear. Just rent the right gear, when you need it and from the people who know how to use it.

9. TRY A NEW ACTIVITY

Just like how OJz helps you try out new gear, what if you wanted to try a new activity?

“I want to get into stand-up-paddleboarding…”, you say.

So you go buy a $1400 paddleboard and get talked into a $200 carbon paddle so you can be “faster!” NICE! WRONG, turns out you HATE stand-up-paddleboarding but the place you bought the paddleboard from won’t take your board back now that it has that scratch on it. So avoid this scenario and be smart, rent all the gear you need to try out that new hobby before you find out the wrong way.

10. SAVE SOME SPACE

Not all of us have the luxury of a huge gear garage, nor care to spend $90 bucks a month to store all the gear we might hardly use. So why not keep your shoe-box of an apartment spacious and rent gear when you need it, rather than horde it away.

AND WHEN YOU’RE NOT RENTING, TRY RENTING OUT YOUR OWN GEAR

11. MAKE SOME EXTRA MONEY

Now for those who do have a sick gear closet, why not make some extra cash and rent gear to other outdoor nerds like you? Use the extra funds as beer money or get you one step closer to your next dream trip. It’s easy on OJz to setup your own store, upload your gear and manage bookings all in one place. TRY IT FOR FREE

12. MEET NEW PEOPLE

And just like renting gear, renting out your own gear is a great way to meet cool travelers and like minded outdoorsies like yourself. You might even crack some beers and make a friend (with a couch) in a new land.

I thought the article made a great point when it said you can try before you buy if you rent outdoor equipment. My wife and I have been wanting to get a little bit more into back-packing, so renting our camping and back-packing equipment might be beneficial for us to determine what equipment we’d like to buy. I think it would be a great way for us to save some money in the long run since we’d know beforehand the equipment we’re purchasing has worked in the past for us.
