Many of us have heard of this gluteus maximus-burning hike, and if you live on Oahu, it’s the perfect calorie killer with a view to boot. Welcome to Kokohead, the most organic stair master, aside from Stairway to Heaven, Hawaii has to offer. Enjoy this hike on a Monday and head to ChaChaCha afterwards for their all day happy hour, or watch the sunrise and enjoy a Fair Trade coffee and a Bagel with Lox at Island Brew Coffeehouse.

Those who are veterans of Kokohead will get up and back down within 45 minutes, easy. For us, we prefer to enjoy the view a little bit longer and get an ab-workout in at the top. The bunkers provide a perfect platform for an extra workout to make those frosty brews taste that much more victorious. We recommend you give yourselves 1-2 hours for this hike, a small day pack with water, a quick snack, extra sunscreen, and your camera, phone, or Gopro to capture the success at the top. This hike is extremely exposed, and a 2pm start time on a non-cloudy, no-wind day is definitely discouraged, especially if this is your first time!

An early rise or sunset departure time will provide for optimum weather and spectacular views. You’ll find restrooms and water fountains for public use by the parking lot. Here are the directions of how to get there from town and where to park!

From Town (Waikiki side)

  1. TakeI-H-1 EandHI-72 to Ahukini St (you’ll be on H-1 for about 10 miles until you get into Hawaii-Kai)
  2. Turn left on toLunalilo Home Rd
  3. Turn right on to Ahukini St

This is a residential area and will take you straight into Kokohead Park where you’ll see tennis courts, a baseball field, and public parking. Find a spot to park and follow the dirt trail next to the far side of the lot to the start of the stairs (near the baseball dugouts). From there, head on up at your own pace and enjoy the burn!

After you’ve finished your hike and have replenished with whatever liquid libations you prefer, head over to Sandys (directions from Kokohead to Sandys) for some salt water therapy to complete the excursion. Happy exploring OJz!DCIM101GOPRO
